Etsako Solar Resource Map

Etsako Solar Map: An Online Web App for PV System Design and Optimisation
Introduction
Solar power is a clean and reliable alternative to irregular grid electricity in Etsako. However, many households and businesses struggle to access accurate solar resource data that can guide the design of efficient photovoltaic (PV) systems. To bridge this gap, we have developed an online web application — Etsako Solar Map — that provides easy-to-use solar radiation data and system optimisation tools tailored to local conditions.
Objectives
To create a user-friendly web platform where residents can access solar energy data specific to the Etsako area.
To provide interactive features for PV system design, including optimal tilt angle, panel orientation, and expected energy yield.
To empower residents, installers, and small businesses to make informed solar investment decisions.
To serve as a long-term knowledge hub for renewable energy adoption within the Etsako region.
Core Features of the Web App
Interactive Solar Map showing average daily and monthly solar radiation across Etsako East, West, and Central.
System Sizing Calculator that helps users estimate PV panel requirements based on household or business energy needs.
Optimisation Tool suggesting best tilt angle and panel orientation for maximum performance.
Downloadable Reports for residents and installers.
Mobile-Friendly Interface to ensure accessibility on smartphones.
Expected Benefits
Residents gain practical insights before investing in solar systems.
Installers can use reliable data to improve accuracy in system design.
Businesses reduce costs by optimising system size and avoiding overspending.

Solar Design Calculator — Quick, Local, Practical

Fast answers for installers, farmers, everyday users and engineers — no heavy jargon.

Local solar at a glance (simplified)

Peak Sun Hours (PSH) — the easiest single number to use when sizing panels — varies across Nigeria: roughly 4.0–4.5 kWh/m²/day along the coastal south, 4.5–5.5 kWh/m²/day across the middle belt, and 5.5–6.5+ kWh/m²/day in the far north. These simplified ranges are based on NASA POWER, PVGIS, and local resource studies.

Quick definitions — plain English

  • Irradiance: the sunlight power at an instant (watts per square metre, W/m²).
  • Irradiation: energy over time (kWh/m²/day) — how much sun energy fell that day.
  • Sun Hours: the number of equivalent full-sun hours in a day (same as PSH when measured at 1,000 W/m²).
  • PSH (Peak Sun Hours): a single number you can plug into sizing formulas — e.g., 5 PSH means the site gets energy equal to 5 hours at 1000 W/m².

CALCULATE, OPTIMIZE, AND CONTROL WITH

This tool uses local PSH (NASA / PVGIS simplified ranges) and real manufacturer datasheet numbers from panels available in Nigeria. Enter your daily energy need and your local Sun Hours (PSH) — the app does the heavy lifting and returns clear, actionable results.

1. Panel Quantity
Number of panels required for each panel type, given your Energy/day and Sun Hours.
Formula: Panels = ⌈Energy_per_day (Wh) ÷ (Panel_Power_W × PSH)⌉
2. Total Capacity (Power)
The summed power of the selected panels (useful for inverter sizing).
Formula: Total_W = Panels × Panel_Power_W
3. Total Area
How much roof or ground space you need for each panel option.
Formula: Area_m² = Panels × Panel_Area_m²
4. Total Weight
Quick check for structural planning (roof load).
Formula: Weight_kg = Panels × Panel_Weight_kg

Who this helps: installers, farmers, everyday solar users, and solar engineers who want clear numbers — not dense papers.

All panel specs are taken from manufacturer datasheets (those common in the Nigerian market) so the calculators are grounded in real part numbers and weights.

Note: The PSH values above are simplified for quick estimates. For site-specific accuracy, you can generate precise solar data directly inside this app using the integrated PVGIS or NASA POWER sources — no extra tools needed.

Scholarship Apps

Use our scholarship apps to quickly and easily find schools that offer financial aids, grants and loans.

Solar Training

Take the next step toward designing your own off-grid solar system with confidence.

We build custom applications based on customer’s request. For example, in construction site project, we developed a PEE-AA or Project Execution, Expenses and Analytics App for construction site management.

In addition, secondary school apps and software are developed and available based on the school specific requirements and/or plan. A school may decide to take it up gradually by subscribing for a smaller application to serve some selected classes and then later scale it up for the entire student population. For example, the Academic Records Management (ARM) Software is a custom type application that is designed for any number of classes in colleges and secondary schools.
